ADEN, Yemen, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- A total of three al-Qaida
militants were killed and seven others injured Thursday as a U.S. unmanned
plane fired missiles against several strongholds of the terrorist group in
Yemen's southern province of Abyan, a military official said.
According to the local military official, a U.S. drone fired
two missiles at vehicles and fortifications of the al-Qaida militants on the
outskirts of the coastal city of Shakra, 35 km east of Zinjibar, the provincial
capital of Abyan province.
The official told Xinhua on condition of anonymity that
"the U. S. drone strike pounded vehicles of the al-Qaida militants in
Arqoob area, killing at least three terrorists and injuring seven others."
The United States has stepped up drone strikes against the
Yemen-based al-Qaida wing after killing the U.S.-born cleric Anwar al-Awlaki
along with other leading members in missile attacks earlier this month.
Abyan, some 480 km south of the capital Sanaa, has been the
scene of daily fierce fighting after hundreds of militants from the al-Qaida in
the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) captured Zinjibar and at least three other towns
in May.
Yemeni military forces took back control of Zinjibar only
last month, but heavy clashes are still rocking the region.
