ADEN, Yemen, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- At least nine people, including eight Syrian engineers and a Yemeni army officer, were killed Tuesday morning when a military airplane crashed at an air force base in Yemen's southern province of Lahj, military officials and medics said.
The Russian-made Antonov military cargo plane crashed while landing at the Anad military air force base, a military official told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
"The plane caught fire and then exploded while it was trying to land in the military air force base," he said, adding that "the reason behind the crash remains a mystery."
An intelligence officer said that the military airplane was coming from the capital Sanaa with "eight Syrians and seven Yemenis on board," most of them mechanics and doctors.
Medics at Ibin Khaldoon hospital in Houta city, the provincial capital of Lahij province, confirmed the death toll to Xinhua.
Another military officer at the air force base said that the plane crashed "due to a technical failure."
"The fate of the rest onboard the plane is still unclear," the officer said, adding that "the plane crashed due to a technical failure and investigations will be conducted during the few upcoming hours to know the causes."
