ADEN, Yemen, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Military warplanes of the Yemeni air force struck several al-Qaida hideouts Wednesday in various areas of the southern province of Abyan, killing 12 terrorists, including a leading member of the group, a senior army officer said.
The local army officer, who asked to remain anonymous, said that military warplanes launched three successful air strikes against targets of the al-Qaida militants in the mountainous district of al-Mahfad in northeast Zinjibar city, the provincial capital of Abyan province.
The air strikes bombed a vehicle belonging to the al-Qaida militants in a mountainous road in al-Mahfad district, killing five insurgents, including a leading member of the group named Fahd al-Qusu, according to the army officer.
Meanwhile, another local officer of the Military Intelligence Agency told Xinhua that a U.S air strike pounded the gatherings of the militants in the al-Qaida-seized coastal city of Shakra, killing seven insurgents of the terrorist group.
Abyan, some 480 km south of capital Sanaa, is a key stronghold of the al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP).
Government troops freed the besieged army forces and recaptured Zinjibar city earlier this month after three-month-long fighting with AQAP militants.
