Intensified air raids kill 39 al-Qaida militants in south Yemen

ADEN, Yemen, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Yemeni air forces carried out intensified air raids Wednesday night on the fortifications and hideouts of the al-Qaida militants, killing 39 members of the terrorist group, and injuring more than 40 others in the southern province of Abyan, local army officers said.
The government forces launched the raids on some gatherings of the al-Qaida militants after the latter attacked a military base in the Dovis area earlier, an officer told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
A close source to the al-Qaida militants said the military aircraft came from the sea and hovered for minutes before bombing the insurgents groups, which caused a large number of victims.
Witnesses said some vehicles were seen carrying the dead and injured bodies to the hospital of al-Arazi in Jaar city.
Earlier, at least eight al-Qaida militants and six soldiers were killed and 49 others from both sides were injured in an attack by the terrorist group on a governmental military base in the Dovis area in Abyan on Tuesday evening.
A local officer of the Military Intelligence Agency said that special forces of the counter-terrorism units would arrive in Abyan province soon to participate in the fighting against the al- Qaida militants.
Abyan, some 480 km south of the capital Sanaa, has become almost under control of resurgent al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula since the militants seized Abyans' provincial capital city of Zinjibar and Jaar late in May.
