Air strikes kill 8 al-Qaida militants in south Yemen's Abyan


ADEN, Yemen, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- At least eight al-Qaida militants were killed on Tuesday when warplanes of the Yemeni air forces struck several hideouts of the terrorist group in the restive southern province of Abyan, local army officers said.
The officer told Xinhua on condition of anonymity that a tribal checkpoint in the al-Argoob area, east of the coastal city of Shakra in Abyan, which was seized by al-Qaida militants earlier this week, was stricken by the air forces, leaving eight members of the terrorist group killed.
Meanwhile, another local officer of the Military Intelligence Agency said that a rocket launched by a military aircraft hit the hideouts of the insurgents in the center of coastal city of Shakra in the early hours of Tuesday, a number of the al-Qaida militants were either killed or injured in the strikes.
Al-Qaida militants in the past few days escalated suicide attacks targeting armed tribesmen who engaged in the fighting with the army forces against the terrorist group.
