ADEN, Yemen, July 1 (Xinhua) -- Yemeni government warplanes pounded several al-Qaida targets in the southern province of Abyan on Friday evening, local army officers told Xinhua.
The army air forces carried out several strikes against al- Qaida hideouts in the Zinjibar city, the officer said, who asked to remain anonymous.
No information about casualties was available till now, the officer added.
Another army officer said that the naval forces in the province of Aden were also involved in the battle against al-Qaida.
A tribal chief said that the Abyan leading tribes were holding discussions to mediate a cease-fire between al-Qaida militants and army troops amid ongoing fierce battles.
The worsening internal conditions in Yemen created a haven for al-Qaida to plot, plan and mount attacks on military brigades and government buildings in Yemen's southern and eastern provinces.
