5 al-Qaida militants killed, 3 injured in air strikes in Yemen's Abyan

ADEN, Yemen, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- At least five al-Qaida militants were killed and three others were seriously injured on Saturday when warplanes of the Yemeni air forces carried out several airstrikes against the terrorist group hideouts in the southern restive province of Abyan, local army officers told Xinhua.
The airstrikes targeted a number of al-Qaida targets and gatherings in the al-Qaida-seized Zinjibar city, the provincial capital of Abyan, leaving five members killed and three others seriously injured, the officer said, asking to remain anonymous.
"Two buildings located on the eastern outskirts of the Zinjibar city were hit in the government airstrikes, which killed and injured several militants," he said.
Military aircrafts were heavily hovering over the Luader city during the early hours of Saturday without carrying out any airstrikes, according to local residents.
Abyan, some 480 km south of the capital Sanaa, is a key stronghold of the al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP).
The Government forces have been waging intensified battles and air strikes against the terrorist group after the latter seized two largest cities of Abyan, Jaar and Zinjibar, late in May.
