4 gov't soldiers, 15 al-Qaida militants killed in battles in southern Yemen

ADEN, Yemen, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) – At least 15 al-Qaida militants and four Yemen government soldiers were killed Thursday in battles in the turbulent southern province of Abyan, an army officer said.

Fierce battles erupted following an attack by dozens of al- Qaida militants against a militarypost of the 201st Armored Army Brigade positioned in the Hassan valley east of Zinjibar, theprovincial capital of Abyan province, killing at least 15 militants and four soldiers, the local armyofficer told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

"After a heavy artillery shelling and firing of Katyusha rockets, the army managed to foil the al-Qaida attack," the officer said.

The officer also said that a Saudi and an Iraqi national were among the killed militants.

A high-ranking army officer was injured during the fight and was sent to a military hospital in theneighboring port city of Aden, according to a local medic.

Abyan, some 480 km south of the country's capital Sanaa, has been the scene of daily fighting after militants of al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) captured Zinjibar and at least threeother towns late in May.

Fears mounted that the AQAP militants may exploit the turmoil that have been rattling theimpoverished Arab country since late January to expand its foothold and military operations inthe southern regions.
