ADEN, Yemen, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- Yemeni army units carried out an artillery bombing against al-Qaida militants in the flashpoint southern province of Abyan early Sunday, killing at least eight terrorists, including a Saudi national, an army officer said.
The army units of the 119th Armored Brigade carried out an intense artillery bombing on the al-Qaida hideouts in Bajdar neighborhood in the east of Zinjibar city, the provincial capital of Abyan, leaving at least eight terrorists killed and dozens of others injured, the local army official told Xinhua on condition of anonymity, adding that one of them was identified as a Saudi national, named Neif al-Qahtani.
The army offensive was mounted a day after dozens of al-Qaida militants tried to sneak into military posts on the outskirts of Zinjibar city, according to military sources.
Abyan, some 480 km south of the capital Sanaa, has been the scene of daily fierce fighting after terrorists from the al-Qaida group captured Zinjibar and at least three other towns in May.
Yemeni military forces took back the control of Zinjibar in September, but heavy clashes are still rocking the region.
