ADEN, Yemen, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- A total of four people were killed and 10 others injured Wednesday morning during clashes between Yemeni government troops and opposition gunmen in the troubled southern province of Taiz, witnesses said.
A witness told Xinhua that fierce military confrontations took place in Jamal street between troops loyal to President Ali Abdullah Saleh and opposition gunmen who claimed to protect anti- government protesters in downtown Taiz city, leaving at least two civilians killed and 10 others injured.
The shooting broke out after the opposition gunmen tried to storm some government buildings there, witnesses said.
Two gunmen were also killed in the clashes, said a medic.
A security official told Xinhua on condition of anonymity that heavy shelling attacks hit Rowda neighborhood overnight, destroying several residential buildings.
Taiz, some 270 km southwest of the capital Sanaa, is Yemen's largest city where tens of thousands of people have been camping out in Freedom Square since February to demand "peaceful ouster of the 33-year-ruler Saleh."
