Five Yemeni soldiers, senior army officer injured in clashes with al- Qaida militants

ADEN, Yemen, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- At least five soldiers of the Yemeni government troops and a senior army officer were critically injured Monday during armed confrontation with al-Qaida militants in the restive southern province of Abyan, an army official said.
The local army official told Xinhua on condition of anonymity that fierce clashes took place between units of the 119th Armored Army Brigade and dozens of al-Qaida militants in the al-Kuda area, leaving five soldiers and a senior army officer seriously injured.
A local medic confirmed the toll to Xinhua, adding that four al- Qaida militants were injured in clashes in the eastern parts of Zinjibar city, the provincial capital of Abyan province.
Abyan, some 480 km south of the country's capital Sanaa, has been the scene of fierce daily fighting after hundreds of militants of the al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) captured Zinjibar and at least three other towns in May.
Yemeni military forces recaptured Zinjibar last month, but heavy clashes are still rocking the region.
