ADEN, Yemen, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- A high-ranking officer of the Yemeni air force was killed and two of his bodyguards were seriously injured Tuesday when explosives attached to their vehicle exploded near a military base in the southern province of Lahj, a security official said.
The local security official, who asked to remain anonymous, said that a Brigadier General at the southern military air base of Anad was killed and two of his bodyguards were critically injured when an improvised explosive device exploded in al-Aishash area northeast of Aden.
The official accused al-Qaida militants of plotting the attack.
"The officer's vehicle was exploded while he was getting out of the military air base heading towards a public market," a source at the military air base told Xinhua.
The officer was in charge of training pilots at the military air base, he added.
Al-Qaida militants have increased attacks on military officials and police stations in the southern region.
For more than three months, government troops have been fighting militants of the al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) who were apparently taking advantage of the country's nearly nine months of unrest to expand their military operations and control in the lawless southern and eastern parts of the country.
