3 gov't troops killed, 4 wounded in al-Qaida land-mine explosion in south Yemen

ADEN, Yemen, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Three government troops were killed and four others injured on Sunday, when a landmine planted by al-Qaida militants exploded in the southern province of Abyan, an army officer said.
The army officer, who asked to remain anonymous, said that a landmine exploded on the eastern outskirts of Zinjibar city, the provincial capital of Abyan, which was freed on Saturday by a large campaign of the Yemeni army forces.
"A landmine exploded when an army convoy was heading to the Amodia area to track the rest of the al-Qaida militants," the army officer from the 119th Armored Brigade told Xinhua.
He added that three al-Qaida militants were killed also in fighting with government troops in the Amodia area.
Meanwhile, a source close to the al-Qaida militants said that leading members of the group promised to begin a guerrilla war against the army forces in various areas of Abyan province.
Another local officer of the Military Intelligence Agency said that dozens of the al-Qaida militants fled to Jaar city, Abyan's second largest city, which is still under control of the terrorist group since late May.
The government forces have been fighting with al-Qaida militants for more than three months after the terrorists took control of Zinjibar along with other surrounding cities, forcing many al-Qaida militants to flee and search for safer places in neighboring provinces.
