5 al-Qaida militants, 2 civilians killed in air strikes in S Yemen


ADEN, Yemen, July 5 (Xinhua) -- At least five al-Qaida fighters, two civilians were killed and five others were seriously injured on Tuesday during air strikes carried out by government warplanes against al-Qaida targets in Yemen's southern province of Abyan, local army officers told Xinhua.
The air forces carried out several air raid against al-Qaida hideouts in Zinjibar, the provincial capital of Abyan, and pounded the Central Security forces headquarters, which was controlled by al-Qaida fighters, the officers told Xinhua, who asked to remain anonymous, adding that rockets and mortar shells hit some residential buildings nearby the al-Qaida targets and two civilians were killed and five of others were seriously injured.
The Central Security forces headquarters was used to be as a center for al-Qaida military operations and meetings, the officers said.
Meanwhile, a source close to al-Qaida militants told Xinhua that five al-Qaida fighters were killed and four others were injured during the air strikes in Jaar area.
Vessels of the Yemeni naval forces carried out fierce attacks late Monday at positions of al-Qaida militants, who severely encircled the 25th Mechanized Brigade in the southern Zinjibar city, the provincial capital of Abyan province, according to local officials.
Al-Qaida militants imposed a tightened siege on the 25th Mechanized Brigade from all surrounding sides since a month ago.
Government forces have carried out intensified air strikes against al-Qaida hideouts during the past two weeks ago after the latter seized two largest Abyan's cities of Jaar and Zinjibar, about 480 km south of the capital Sanaa.
