Warplanes strike al-Qaida hideouts in south Yemen

ADEN, Yemen, June 18 (Xinhua) -- Warplanes of Yemen's army forces carried out air strikes Saturday against several al-Qaida hideouts in the southern province of Abyan, a local military officer told Xinhua.
The air forces hit targets of al-Qaida in Khanfar area, where hundreds of the group's militants were gathering, the officer told Xinhua on condition of anonymity, adding that dozens of al-Qaida militants were either injured or killed during the strikes.
Local residents told Xinhua that the air forces began shelling early Saturday morning, and the bombing was concentrated on al- Qaida-controlled Jaar and Khanfar cities.
The continuing battles forced around 30,000 residents to flee their homes to the port city of Aden, according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
Government forces intensified battles against the terrorist group in the recent two weeks after the latter seized Jaar and Zinjibar and almost controlled the province.
