ADEN, Yemen, June 24 (Xinhua ) -- At least three soldiers and one passerby were killed in a powerful armored vehicle bomb in Yemen's southern port city of Aden on Friday, local medics and witnesses told Xinhua.
Armed men of the separatist Southern Movement fired rocket- propelled grenades at the army troops stationed in al-Mansoura city, causing a huge explosion in two armored vehicles belonging to the army forces, which led to heavy clashes between government troops and separatist gunmen, killing at least three soldiers and a passerby and injuring dozens, Salah al-Kader, an eyewitness said.
Meanwhile, an officer of the Criminal Police who was investigating the blast told Xinhua on condition of anonymity that a car with booby trap caused the explosion, denying that the vehicles were hit by rocket-propelled grenades.
The officer accused al-Qaida militants of masterminding the attack.
A local army officer told Xinhua that the separatists also carried out several other armed attacks targeting the government troops on Friday, trying to storm some government buildings and police stations.
On Thursday, three groups of al-Qaida militants carried out armed attacks targeting the main entrance of Aden, leading to violent clashes between the two sides, killing five al-Qaida militants and one soldier and injuring dozens of others from both sides.
Yemen-based al-Qaida forces has stationed on eastern outskirts of the country's main port city of Aden for at least three days, in an apparent attempt to seize the city, according to local security officials.
