ADEN, Yemen, June 26 (Xinhua) -- Yemen's air forces carried out a series of air strikes against al-Qaida hideouts in the southern province of Abyan on Sunday, leaving dozens of al-Qaida militants either killed or injured, a local army officer told Xinhua.
Warplanes of the army air forces struck al-Qaida hideouts in Jaar city and bombed the intelligence headquarters in Abyan, which was controlled by al-Qaida, the officer told Xinhua, who asked to remain anonymous.
The officer said dozens of al-Qaida militants were either killed or injured during the strikes.
Meanwhile, local residents said the air strikes caused huge damages to the intelligence headquarters.
Government forces have carried out intensified air strikes against al-Qaida hideouts during the past two weeks after the latter seized two largest cities of Jaar and Zinjibar in Abyan and declared Zinjibar as the capital city of its "Islamic Emirate" late in May.
