9 soldiers killed in battles with al-Qaida militants in south Yemen


ADEN, Yemen, June 7 (Xinhua) -- At least nine soldiers of the army forces were killed and dozens others injured Monday night during fierce battles with al-Qaida militants in Yemen's southern province of Abyan, a local military official told Xinhua.
Al-Qaida militants ambushed a military convoy in Dovas area and launched a fierce attack and fired rocket-propelled grenades at the military convoy, killing nine soldiers, the official said on condition of anonymity.
Fierce confrontations erupted between the army forces and al- Qaida militants in Dovas area when units of the army tried to regain control of Zinjibar city, the official noted.
The two sides used heavy machine guns including artilleries and mortar shells, he added.
Earlier on Monday, five al-Qaida militants were killed, according to local officials.
Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula gained considerable strength and took control of a number of main cities in south Yemen over the four months of political unrest.
