10 soldiers killed in ambush by al-Qaida in south Yemen

ADEN, Yemen, June 5 (Xinhua) -- At least ten soldiers were killed and dozens others injured in an ambush by al-Qaida militants targeting a military patrol in Yemen's southern province of Abyan earlier on Sunday, a local security official told Xinhua.
Groups of al-Qaida militants ambushed a military convoy in Zinjibar city, the provincial city of Abyan, killing ten soldiers in addition to causing huge damage to a number of military vehicles, the official said on condition of anonymity.
The military convoy was from the southern Aden province to reinforce and strengthen the 25 Mechanized Brigade, which has been besieged by al-Qaida militants since last week, the official said.
Dozens of soldiers and civilians, as well as a number of al- Qaida militants, were killed in fierce battles that had been continuing between the al-Qaida and the army forces since over a week ago.
