8 policemen killed by al-Qaida in southeast Yemen

ADEN, Yemen, April 12 (Xinhua) -- The Yemen-based al-Qaida wing attacked a security checkpoint in the southeastern province of Hadramout on Thursday, killing eight policemen, the country's interior ministry said.
The al-Qaida militants attacked a security checkpoint of the 23th Mechanized Brigade, killing eight policemen and injuring six others, the ministry said in a statement posted on its website.
Several al-Qaida fighters were killed in the attack, it said without giving the exact number of casualties.
The al-Qaida assailants were attempting to seize control over the military site, the statement added.
It was the second deadly attack on police checkpoints in Hadramout province in recent days.
Earlier in the day, fighter jets of the Yemeni air forces bombed bases of the al-Qaida militants in the southern province of Abyan, killing at least 18 terrorists, as army forces backed by pro-government tribesmen continued their offensive against the terrorist group for the fourth day, a military official told Xinhua.
Yemen has experienced a surge of violence in southern and eastern provinces, where the resurgent al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) has been intensifying armed attacks on the government institutions and the army troops, exploiting security vacuum resulted from the army splits due to prolonged protest.
